Come to ACLU of Sonoma County’s
2009 Award Ceremony & Annual Dinner Friday, April 3rd!
The Sonoma Chapter’s 2009 Awards Celebration and Annual Dinner will feature keynote speaker Julia Harumi Mass and will be held at the Santa Rosa Veterans Auditorium April 3rd.
Julia Harumi Mass is a staff attorney for the ACLU of Northern California and lead attorney in the ACLU’s lawsuit against the Sonoma County Sheriff Department and the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The lawsuit alleges that our Sheriff Department has collaborated with ICE and its officers to stop and search people who appear to be Latino, interrogate them about their immigration status based on their perceived race, and unlawfully detain them in the County jail.
Her keynote address, De-ICEing the Sheriff: The ACLU Sues the Sonoma Sheriff & U.S. Immigration, will discuss the lawsuit and the ramifications on civil liberties at both the local and national level. This celebration is the Sonoma Chapter’s only fundraising event and is always an interesting and fun occasion. This is your opportunity to have a great evening and support your local chapter. This year it will be held at the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Auditorium.
The awards celebration and annual dinner will once again feature the presentation of the 2009 Jack Green Civil Liberties Award to long time civil rights activist Willie Garrett and a three-course sit-down dinner featuring lasagna and pesto pasta by Art “The Pasta King” Ibleto. Recording artist Moss Henry will provide music. If you have never been an ACLU member we’ll give you a free ACLU membership when you pay for the dinner! This is always a great evening that brings together progressive people for a night of fun, food, music and celebration and honoring those who have contributed to civil liberties in our community. So come, it’s always a fun event! Reservations can be made by downloading the reservation form (click on: I want to make my reservation! below) or call us for information at (707) 765-5005.
